NAMES OF GOD IN THE OLD TESTAMENT

[Names of God in the Old Testament]

Here are the most important Divine names of the Hebrew Old Testament
(GOD)
1- EL :-
It is fairly common name means [Power] or [The strong one].
As it shows in (Genesis 31:29)[ It is in my power to do you harm].
It represents meaning of God and the plural(i l a n I) means the God is
frequent in Akkadian.
And the word (EL) a particular deity on Canaanite literature where ( EL)
is a senior and venerable position among the other gods.
In the Old Testament (EL) means this :-
1- EL is used for God ( The God of Israel) and occasionally for some other gods (Isaiah 44:17) and the preluder of the gods as in (Exodus 15:11).
The word is generally poetical.
2- EL is used as a compound with one of God attributes at a holy places like
( EL SHADDAI : God Almighty) as in (Genesis 17:1) or ( EL ROI : God
of Seeing) as in ( Genesis 16:13) . That was the original reference to the
deity of EL.

2- ELOHIM:-
The ordinary Hebrew word for God, means powerful or a strong one.
The word has a plural form and the singular form ( ELOAH) can be found in Job.
This plural form been used with a singular verb meaning the deity implies
a mono theism for trinity of one God, like the (Genesis 1:26) [ Then God
( ELOHIM) said “ lets us make man in our image, in our likeness.......].
Why does God use the plural form? Some views say this is a reference to the
Holy Trinity : God the Father, Jesus Christ His Son, and the Holy Spirit .
All of whom are God (ELOHIM) .

3- YAHWEH:- [YHWH].
This is the Hebrew word of ( The LORD) and later a substitutes such as
(ADONAI) which means ( my Lord).
The pronunciation ( JEHOVAH) has no authority at all and appeared only in late medieval times which the pronunciation in ancient times was (YAHWEH
is concluded the Hebrew of the 4 letters ( YHWH).
In ( Exodus 3:14 ) [ God said to Moses “ I AM WHO I AM” explaining the
name ( YAHWEH) to (I AM) showing Moses His unchanging nature by using
the same name He used with Abraham in(Genesis 12:1-3). With Isaac in
(Genesis 26:2-5). and with Jacob in( Genesis 28:13-15).
The Greek translators represented the word usually by[Kyrios] The LORD.

4- SHADDAI:-
Usually comes combined with (EL) like (EL SHADDAI) which means
(Al Mighty) in English. The word (SADU) means mountain in Akkadian.
This name used many times in (Job) and elsewhere like in ( Exodus 6:3)
not by the name (YAHWEH) but the name ( EL SHADDAI) and in(Genesis
17:1, 35:11) . It is antiquity is probably confirmed by it's use in the ancient
list of names in ( Nu 1:5-15) like ( AMMI-SHADDAI)means My Kinsman is
Shaddai.

5- ELYON:-
Means ( Most High). As a divine title this also is known on Canaanite soil and it appears as (EL-ELYON) or (GOD most high) like in (Genesis 14) probably
connected with Jerusalem as a pre-Israelite deity later assimilated with YEHWEH.
